Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane has called for a new period of nationwide protests in Mozambique, set to last three days starting today, November 13, 2024, in all provincial capitals, challenging the electoral process.

"We will protest at the borders, ports, and in provincial capitals (...). We will halt all activities to make it clear that the people are tired," Mondlane urged on Monday in a live broadcast on his official Facebook account, speaking about the "fourth phase" of contesting the October 9 general elections.

Academic perspectives on the fourth phase of protests in Mozambique

According to some academics, the fourth phase of protests announced by Venâncio Mondlane could further exacerbate poverty levels in Mozambique. "Politicians gain from this because agreements are always political," some argue.

In an interview with DW, sociologist Hélder Jauana acknowledged that popular uprisings serve as a mechanism for political pressure but warned of potential impacts on the public. While he noted the possible political gains, he emphasized the “collateral damage” for an already impoverished population.
